Writing saved me!
It empowered me. It emboldened me. Without this gift, I would not be here. It gave me purpose and the confidence to speak up when I thought that I didn’t have a voice. Silence equals silence.
There’s nothing more powerful than using language to end the silence. There’s nothing more powerful than communicating and connecting with others who are like you and who are vastly different from you. Writing gave me the tools necessary to reach outward and inward as a way to make sense of this life. I accepted who I am and decided who I wanted to be through the act & the art of creative writing. Creative writing is powerful and transformational.
Reading Queer seeks to use the transformational power of creative writing to establish Miami as a center for queer literature. I need your help to transform the lives of queer writers by providing them a platform for self-exploration and self-expression and to demonstrate how creative writing can be used as a medium to improve, empower and enrich the lives of the queer community.
Reading Queer will establish the following:
- a series of creative writing workshops for the community led by locally and nationally recognized queer writers
- a Literary Salon Series led by writers across genres
- an annual week-long literary festival
- an online archive of queer writing
However, I can’t do this alone. I need your help. As a recipient of a $30,000 John S. and James L. Knight Foundation Knight Arts Challenge Grant, I must raise $30,000 in order to receive $30,000 in matching funds.That’s the “challenge” in Challenge Grant.
