Ribas’ work mirrors the vast diversity of hybrid, genre-bending and genre-blending works (image & text) that Reading Queer fosters. Your donation will enable us to hire writing mentors & allow students who can’t afford the cost of a workshop to attend regardless of their ability to pay.

About the RQ Writing Academy: Literature saves lives. As queer writers and readers we know this from personal experience. Finding a novel, story or poem that speaks to us can mean the difference between a life cut short and a life worth living. The pieces of ourselves we find reflected in what we read can allow us to tap into a vital sense of relatedness and belonging too often denied us. The Reading Queer Writing Academy aims to inspire and prepare members of the queer community to tap into the powerful potential inherent to the act and the art of writing. Consisting of eight distinct workshops spread out throughout the calendar year, the Academy will serve as a platform for writers of all walks of life to explore, pursue and perfect the craft in its myriad forms. As an expression of our conviction that writing is a right, not a privilege, all workshops are accessible to anyone regardless of ability to pay and most are open to the general public.

About Emanuel (Emi) Ribas: Emi Ribas is a Cuban-American artist born and raised in Miami. He is a full-time student at Miami Dade College Wolfson Campus. It is only last year that he decided to pursue a career in fine art drawing, and intends to finish his academic endeavors with a Master in Visual Arts. Emanuel, also known as Emi, or Manny comes from a Christian middle class Cuban machista background, and is one of two openly gay members in his family. He volunteers at Biscayne Bay Aquatic Preserves and Shake-A-Leg Miami to support ocean conservation. Emanuel participates in fundraising events as well as documents the underwater environment of Biscayne Bay in his speedo-like-undies or in his 80’s running shorts.
